OpenAI
OpenAI in the enterprise
As of November 5, 2026. Every figure links to its source; company-reported numbers are labeled as such.
OpenAI sells to businesses through workplace ChatGPT subscriptions (Enterprise and Business), its Codex coding tool, a new platform for building and managing AI agents called Frontier, and pay-per-use access for developers. Business is now its bigger side. In August 2026 its CFO told investors that most revenue now comes from enterprise, up from just over 40% in March, according to CNBC. It counts more than 2 million business customers, double a year earlier. Its total annualized revenue was nearly $50 billion at the end of September 2026 (Financial Times), with the enterprise run rate up 107% in Q3. The company is aiming for $70 billion or more by year-end (Bloomberg). Reported figures vary: Axios put the run rate near $70 billion in late September, and OpenAI's figures have generally included revenue it shares with Microsoft.
Where it is winning: reach and big-name rollouts. Samsung Electronics is putting ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex in front of all its Korean staff and its global device division, one of OpenAI's largest enterprise deals. CGI is expanding use across its consultants. U.S. federal agencies got ChatGPT Enterprise for $1 a year under a GSA deal. Intuit, State Farm, Thermo Fisher and Uber were early Frontier customers. To speed up adoption, OpenAI formed DeployCo, a $10 billion venture with TPG, Bain Capital, Advent, Brookfield and Goanna Capital, to push its tools into their portfolio companies.
Where it is struggling: OpenAI is now number two in business AI. Anthropic's Q2 2026 revenue was $11.5 billion against OpenAI's $6.7 billion (Reuters), and large buyers like Samsung use several AI vendors side by side. Getting customers is getting expensive. OpenAI guaranteed DeployCo's private equity backers a 17.5% annual return, and it projected a 2026 loss of about $14 billion. Its $1 federal pilot is giving way to discounted pay-per-use pricing. What to watch: whether enterprise growth holds at the Q3 pace, and whether Frontier wins the core business processes that today run on Salesforce or Workday software.
