Hiring Heatmap

A net talent signal built from every Talent & Organizations story machine.net has covered in the trailing 30 days, each tagged at write time as a hire, a layoff, a departure, or neutral. The index starts at a neutral 50 and moves with the net balance of those tags — hires push it up, layoffs and departures push it down, with a layoff counting for more than a single executive departure. Like AI Capital Flow, this reflects machine.net’s own coverage, not a comprehensive labor-market measure.

Why a net signal, not a raw hire/layoff count

A single mass layoff and a single executive departure are not the same magnitude of story, so they’re weighted differently (layoff: −1.0, departure: −0.5, hire: +1.0, neutral: 0) rather than counted as equal ticks against each other. The index is 50 + 10 × net signal, clamped to the 0–100 scale the other tiles use, so a quiet week with no Talent & Organizations coverage at all reads as a flat neutral 50, not a missing value.

Like Capital Flow, a story drops out of the window once its publish date falls outside the trailing 30 days — not because the hire or layoff stopped mattering, just because this is specifically a rolling recent-activity read.

Computed daily from machine.net’s own published coverage, with no AI model involved in the calculation. See the full Signal methodology for how every other number on the Signal page is calculated.
