Character.AI in the enterprise
As of November 5, 2026. Every figure links to its source; company-reported numbers are labeled as such.
Character.AI never had a real enterprise business. It is a consumer app where people chat with AI characters, and it made money from a premium subscription (c.ai+) and in-app ads, not from selling AI to companies. Its bankruptcy filing shows revenue of about $23.6 million in 2025, rising to about $5.3 million a month by August 2026 (about $2.8 million from subscriptions and $2.5 million from ads). It was still losing $8 million to $9 million a month and had about 12 million monthly users.
Its most important business deals were for its technology and people, not its product. In August 2024 Google took a non-exclusive license to its technology and rehired co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas. On October 12, 2026, the company filed for Chapter 11 in Delaware to sell its assets. It listed assets and liabilities of $50 million to $100 million each. Disney is the lead bidder, offering $20 million for a non-exclusive, permanent license to some of its intellectual property. In September Disney hired former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as its first chief technology officer, and several Character.AI technical staff were expected to follow. Disney has agreed to lend some former staff back to keep the platform running safely during the sale.
For business buyers there is no vendor relationship to evaluate. What to watch: the asset sale, expected to close in late November or early December 2026, and whether a buyer keeps the platform running, since it will be shut down otherwise. For investors it is a warning about consumer AI economics. Computing costs were about $56 million in the first eight months of 2026, roughly 45% of spending, and the company faced lawsuits over harm to teens, five of which it settled in January 2026.
