Anthropic's IPO Prospectus Shows $42 Billion Loss While Company Seeks $2 Trillion Valuation

Anthropic is preparing to go public at a valuation exceeding $2 trillion, according to an IPO prospectus reviewed by Reuters, more than double the $965 billion mark the company fetched just four months earlier in a $65 billion private round. The same filing discloses a $42 billion net loss for 2025 on revenue of $4.6 billion, a twelvefold increase from 2024, according to Reuters and a Motley Fool analysis of the same document published Tuesday.

The headline loss figure is more complicated than it appears. Roughly $34 billion of the $42 billion stems from an accounting charge tied to the revaluation of financing instruments as the company's valuation stepped up between funding rounds, not from operating cash burn, per Reuters' reporting. Stripped of that charge, Anthropic's operating loss still exceeded $8 billion in 2025, up from about $3 billion in 2024, while infrastructure and compute spending tripled to $7.33 billion. The prospectus additionally discloses $518 billion in forward cloud and compute obligations over the coming year.

The valuation trajectory has been unusually steep: Anthropic raised $30 billion at a $380 billion valuation in February 2026, then $65 billion at $965 billion in May in a round led by Altimeter Capital, Sequoia Capital, Dragoneer and Coatue with hyperscaler commitments including $5 billion from Amazon, according to TechCrunch's coverage of that round. The prospectus reviewed by Reuters targets an IPO after November's U.S. midterm elections, and separately flags that nearly a quarter of Anthropic's revenue is concentrated with just two customers — a risk factor the company itself disclosed.

Markets treated the news as a modest tailwind rather than a catalyst. Major indexes were mixed to lower at midday Monday on persistent Treasury-yield pressure, and the Motley Fool's market wrap noted tech stocks got only a partial boost from the $2 trillion valuation reports, insufficient to offset broader yield jitters dragging on the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow.

What the filing signals is a valuation now built almost entirely on forward compute-driven revenue growth rather than trailing profitability — a bet public markets have not previously had to underwrite for a frontier AI lab at this scale. Anthropic's disclosed 2025 results sit alongside OpenAI's own reported $38.5 billion net loss on roughly $13 billion of revenue for the same year, meaning the two most closely watched AI IPO candidates will both ask investors to look past historic losses toward compute-obligation-backed growth curves. How the market prices Anthropic's listing, given its own disclosure that nearly a quarter of revenue rests with two customers, will likely set the template — and the risk tolerance bar — for the next wave of AI companies weighing a public debut.
