AMD pays 8.2 billion in stock for Fei-Fei Li's World Labs

AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the spatial-intelligence startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at 8.2 billion dollars. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to chief executive Lisa Su, and her full team moves with her. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval.

The price tag stands out against World Labs' own funding history. The company, founded in 2024, was reportedly in talks for a funding round near a 5 billion dollar valuation as recently as January 2026, then closed a 1 billion dollar round in February that included 200 million dollars from Autodesk. AMD's offer values the startup at roughly eight times the total capital it had raised and well above where private investors had priced it only months earlier, a step-up that signals how aggressively strategic acquirers are now bidding for world-model and spatial-AI talent rather than waiting for later funding rounds.

The rationale is explicitly competitive. AMD has framed the acquisition as a way to pair World Labs' expertise in world models, technology for perceiving and reconstructing 3D environments, with its own compute hardware, positioning the combined effort against Nvidia's parallel push into robotics and physical AI. The two companies had already been collaborating on GPU optimization before the deal was struck.

"Without having a focused hardware effort, AI is hobbled in efficiency." — Fei-Fei Li

For investors, the deal is a data point on pricing in the physical-AI segment: a chipmaker is now willing to pay a substantial premium over recent private-market marks to bring model expertise in-house, rather than relying on partnership or licensing arrangements alone.
